Emissions Reduction solutions
Increasing Efficiency & Reducing Venting from Controlled Tanks
Increase operational efficiency and reduce fugitive emissions on controlled tanks.
Precision pressure monitoring at the top of controlled tanks not only detects emission events but also provides visibility into system issues that can be addressed to prevent future emissions and increase operational efficiency.
Proven Outcomes
Through a project with the Methane Innovation Collaborative (MIC)*, Tourmaline field tested TOKU QuickSense Pressure devices at the top of controlled tanks. This project demonstrated the benefits of precision pressure monitoring over methane monitoring and the benefits of the TOKU QuickSense Pressure system in this application. Emission Event Detection & Measurement
When pressure at the top of a tank crossed the alarm threshold for pressure release and then dropped suddenly, the thief hatch had vented because of overpressure. This was confirmed by perimeter methane monitors.
The QuickSense Pressure also provides detailed pressure information that allows for the volume calculation of the emission event.
Diagnostic Abilities for Preventative Action
Continuous pressure monitoring provides visibility into system issues that lead to emissions events, so:
- Problems can be diagnosed more quickly, increasing labour efficiency
- Systems can be optimized to increase operational efficiency, increasing production
- Operators can be notified of issues for immediate action, increasing production
- Ultimately emissions can be prevented
More Benefits than Perimeter Monitoring
Pressure monitoring at the top of a controlled tank goes beyond perimeter methane monitoring, providing operators with valuable information they can easily act on to prevent fugitive emissions.
Built to Perform
High precision | Every second, TOKU devices collect temperature-compensated pressure measurements. In low-pressure applications (e.g. 1 psi or 6.9 kPa), like at the top of controlled tanks, it can capture changes down to 0.0002 psi.

*About the Methane Innovation Collaborative (MIC)
MIC, formerly known as the NGIF ETC Program, is Canada’s largest coordinated effort focused on accelerating methane emissions management technologies. A consortium of NGIF Accelerator, Tourmaline Oil Corp., and the University of Calgary, MIC provides cleantech innovators with a controlled lab environment at the University of Calgary, live field trial capabilities at Tourmaline, and commercialization support from NGIF Accelerator to pilot, validate, and commercialize methane measurement, monitoring, and mitigation technologies.
MIC is currently supported by the Government of Alberta (Environment and Protected Areas).
